Introduction of Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office

Main Duty

  1. Devote to investigate, educate, research, promote, preserve, and make good use of Alishan forest railway and cultural heritage.
  2. Assess, integrate, and re-develop forest railway and cultural heritage.
  3. Promote and marketing domestic and foreign tourism affair of forest railway.
  4. Boost international cooperation and interaction.
  5. Maintain Forestry Culture Park, railway, and each station’s facilities.
  6. Operate passenger and good delivery
  7. Dispatch forest railway and relative equipment.
  8. Responsible for bridges, tunnels, buildings, and engineering.
  9. Other duties relative to Alishan forest railway and cultural heritage.

Location and Area

It is located at the south-western part Central Mountain Range and Taiwan. It starts from Chiayi City, passes through Jhuci County and finishes at Alishan County. The total length of railway is 71.4 kilometers.

Forest distribution

In the area under the charge of Chiayi Forestry District Office, the elevations of the forests vary greatly from tropical, subtropical, temperate to cold belts, forming vertical forest belts, constituting different forest types such as broad-leaved forests, coniferous mixed with broad-leaved forests and coniferous forests. The main species of coniferous forests are cedar, Taiwania cryptomerioides, peacock pine, Chinese fir and other pines; broad-leaved trees are mainly sorghum, Taiwan Incense Cedar, and oak.

Climate

Taiwan is at the center of the subtropical climate area. The altitude is from average 40 meters to the tallest mountain, Yushan, which up to 3952-meter-tall. The temperature is followed by the decrease of altitude and forms tropical, subtropical, temperate, and frigid climate. Monsoon season is from May to September, in an average annual rainfall of 3000 millimeter, and dry season is from October to April.
