  • Concluded a sister railway agreement on Dec. 9, 2025.
  • The historic Great Zig Zag formation was originally opened in 1869 as part of the Western Railway line built by the New South Wales Government Railways. This major engineering work enabled trains to climb the Blue Mountains for the first time, supporting the transport of people and produce between the western plains of NSW and Sydney. After the route was later bypassed, the formation was revived as a heritage railway in the 1970s. In recent years, two significant bushfires and a major flood caused severe damage to the railway, leaving volunteers with a substantial restoration challenge.
  • The Zig Zag Railway Co-operative Ltd. is currently responsible for the operation and management of the railway. Aside from a small number of paid staff, the majority of passenger services, restoration works and ongoing maintenance rely on a highly dedicated team of volunteers.
  • This railway represents a pioneering engineering achievement that made it possible for trains to cross the Blue Mountains, overcoming steep gradients and challenging terrain. Total length: 11 km; Track gauge: 1067 mm.
  • A defining feature of the railway is its commitment to steam locomotive preservation. Visitors can enjoy heritage experiences through regular steam-hauled services and themed events, supported by experienced volunteers dedicated to maintaining and restoring the historic locomotive and carriage fleet.
