Establishment

Alishan Forest Railway was established in Japanese Occupied Period. In 1903, Government of Taiwan began to conduct the investigation, measurement, and designing because they planned to exploit the timber of Alishan. The construction was started on 1906, but retrieved by government due to financial problem. The section—from Chiayi to Erwanping (length: 66.6km) was operated on December of 1912. With the development of forestry, the government expanded the mainline to Alishan and other branch lines. Nowadays, the route, from Chiayi to Alishan (length: 71.4km), is one of the most famous railways in the world.
